A password-protected directory or area is a folder which can be accessed when a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized people can check out its content. This option may be used for the main folder of a particular website or just for a specific subfolder based on your preferences. For instance, when you are building a new site and you don't want people to see it before it's completely ready, you have to restrict the access to it as a whole, and if you want only some people to be able to access specific files, you are able to password-protect only a specific folder, while the remainder of the site could be seen by anyone. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear in case the login details the visitor enters aren't accurate. Even a direct link to a file won't work so long as any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Hosting

Creating a password-protected area will take just several mouse clicks and a few seconds if you host your websites in a hosting account with us. You shall not have to do anything complicated - you will need to choose a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it should be secured, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. In case a number of individuals need their own login details, there shall not be a problem to create several different usernames with access to the same folder. All protected folders shall appear with a padlock icon inside the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this function is active. If you wish to deactivate the protection function for any folder, you can disable it from the same exact section of the Control Panel in which you have enabled it.
